The work of caring for and arranging the linens, vessels, vestments and flowers enhances and promotes a worshipful and beautiful liturgy for those attending the services. It means that the word of the Lord can be preached and the Eucharist celebrated with grace and power in an appropriately prepared space. The functions of the Altar Guild go back through church history to the old testament so performance of these duties can be a way of connecting to the great traditions of the church. As baptized Christians we are to work, pray and give for the spread of God's kingdom. Certainly, Altar Guild members give liberally of their time and work diligently towards this goal. Although there is no discernment process and of course no ordination, Guilders generally feel that they are ‘called’ and feel a sense of grace and joy in the performance of their duties.
